Hillsboro Road Race - "A Tricky Ending"
I took 7th place out of 50 cat4 women. As my coach Madeleine stated to me "You can't win every race you do even if you're in top shape". The finish of this race was really tricky cause I had great position on the climb and then I so easily lost it on the sketchy, cobblestone-filled, downhill finish. No matter how strong you are, this race is a lot about luck on the way back.
Recap of the last part: I moved my way up on the climb. Took 3 position with Stacy and another rider. When we hit the top of the climb, we gunned it down hill and hit the cobblestone road. I kept pedaling for I knew to coast would slow me down. 2nd to last turn, a sharp corner. I feathered my breaks a little " BIG mistake" I slowed even more on the cobble stone. I lost my pace with Stacy and the other rider. The other 6 0r 7 riders caught up and I kicked it in and took a wheel and pushed down on that peddle so hard. I was max out on my heart rate. Trying not to keep from blowing up. I then hit the last turn and started spinning and gearing up for the sprint. I stayed in the saddle and held patient. Then I got up and sprinted like hell to the finish. I passed two riders.
I'm feeling bummed for not doing a bit better. Again my coach Madeleine, her words to me "Racing is about fitness, brains, luck, chance, and guesswork all mixed together; you can't control what happens in every race. You just have to ride as smart and as strong as you can and cross your fingers for the rest! "
So, that 's Hillsboro RR. Thank you to Leah and family for letting me stay with them in there awesome RV motor home. Congrats to Leah Sanda and Kristen Meshberg in the Cat1,2,3 race. Leah is a warrior out there. She held on and finished the race despite the fact that her legs started to cramp up. Kristen Meshberg, took 7th place. Way to team mates. Also for those Flatlandia boys that did the race. Congrats to you to.
Next up... Leland Kermessee RR.
