Racine Criterium
After a disappointing turnout of the road race last weekend, I was eager to race superweek. I decided midweek to take the trip to Racine. I was also looking forward to hooking up w/ Kristen Meshberg and her 2 children (Sid and Lucinda) for some fun. I had a blast with Kristen's kids. I took them to the park and then watched them run through a huge spray fountain. The best was getting her kids all "sugared up" at a placed in Racine called "the sugar shack" It was an ice cream and candy store that served some really BIG scoop ice cream cones. Favorite flavors were bubble gum and rainbow. Alright, getting to the race, which started at 11:30 a.m. I warmed up and felt really good. I had a chance to preview the course. I knew I had a slight advantage on the small upgrade before the finish line. The course had some rough spots on one side so you had to pay attention. Otherwise, I felt pretty confident I could place in the 10 ten.
Race started. I sat in a bit to see who was strong and going to take the leads. I attacked hard and had a very good gap going but no one followed. I couldn't lap the field by myself it was to early. I would lose it, so I sat in a little. I tried again and had another gap going. I thought this other women was going to work with me but didn't. So I hung back again... Last lap, I picked up the pace and hit it hard up the incline. I was in 3rd position trying to follow Pascale's wheel from P5 team . I lost it and fell behind during the flat. I was not spinning enough to pick up a good sprint. I tried again and shifted and went hard. I came in 6th place... I was very happy. Gotta keep working on those sprints!
Kenosha Criterium
After a wonderful night stay at Ellen's house (Kristen's Friend), I was ready to take on this next course in Kenosha which was fast and flat. This was a challenging course for me. My goal was to stay with the upper part of the field and not pull the field around, which I tend to do. To my surprise, about 40 women lined up. I was nervous but very excited to be racing in such a large field. I was happy to see my pal Janette Rho, the P5 team and Sue from ABD. Race started a bit slow. I went out strong after a few laps. I had another good gap going but again no one tried to bridge. I could feel I did not have enough in my tank to hold it this time so I let the field catch up. I made some attacks but nothing like yesterday's race. The last lap, I got in front of the field half way around the course. I lost my focus and I had very little power to sustain a good hard sprint. I tried to hit it. My legs where not firing. I was tired. I came in 19th place out of 40.
Overall, this was really good racing. Superweek was well organized and very professional like atmosphere. I loved the two days racing. I can not wait to put superweek on my list for next year!
